4 Reasons To Wear Obagi Suncreen Even in the Winter

You might not think you need to wear sunscreen during winter, but that’s a huge myth that can have serious consequences for your health and skin. Here are four reasons why you should keep lathering on your Obagi sunscreen all year round.

Avoid Skin Cancer

The most pressing health issue to avoid from sun exposure is – you guessed it – skin cancer. The best way to protect your skin against it is to invest in a sunscreen that prevents both UVA and UVB rays from penetrating your skin (known as a broad spectrum sunscreen) as both of these rays can cause cancer.

Although UVB rays can vary in strength depending on the seasons, UVA rays maintain their intensity throughout the year and the damage they cause to skin (such as premature ageing and cancer) is not reversible. Remember to use sunscreen all over your skin, not forgetting areas such as behind your knees – this is the most common place for melanoma to strike on women!

Bin the Burns

What is actually happening to sunburnt skin? A lot more than you might realize at first glance! When looked at under a powerful microscope, the blood vessels and cells on sunburnt skin have actually been damaged. If you continue exposing your skin to the sun, more damage will occur, revealed on your skin as discolouration, dryness and wrinkles. Skin also becomes weaker and therefore more prone to being bruised easier.

You might fall into the trap of thinking you can’t get sunburnt when the sky is covered in clouds, but this is not true. In fact, it can lead to serious sunburns because up to 30 percent of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation still strikes the earth when the sky is completely overcast.

Protect Skin from Destruction

A possibly unknown form of sun damage is elastosis. This is when the skin’s collagen tissue and elastin are injured by the sun. This is actually a common type of sun damage that occurs from long exposure to the rays. Symptoms of it include thick or rough skin as well as wrinkles on areas that have been exposed to the sun. The danger is that the sun damage can, over time, lead to more serious health issues such as skin cancer. This is why it’s so important to wear sunscreen, limit your time in the sun and even wear protective clothing and accessories, such as wide-brimmed hats.

It’s Not Just the Sun to Worry About

In Miami, you might feel ecstatic that the weather is holding up in winter, but mind the wind! It can be drying for your skin, causing it to look less than luminous. That’s why you should take care to use a sunscreen that blocks the rays while also providing your skin with nourishment against the drying effects of winter. A moisturizing sunscreen such as Obagi Sun Shield Matte will help to keep your skin in great shape. It is free of fragrance and parabens, being gentle to skin while having a matte finish that won’t let your skin feel or look greasy.

Don’t be fooled into thinking the sun is milder during the winter time or that overcast and snowy skies mean that you can leave your sunscreen at home. You still need to lather on Obagi sunscreen to protect your skin so you can show your best face to the world. Thanks to its nourishing elements, you won’t want to leave home without it.
