What You Need to Know Before You Go Red

Beautiful model red with curly hair

Red hair is a huge trend these days; it seems as though dozens of celebrities have recently turned into redheads overnight! Of course, not everybody is born with unique red locks, but transforming blonde, brunette, or even black hair to a luscious shade of red is just a matter of scheduling an appointment with your stylist. Before you decide to go red, however, there are some things you need to know!

Understanding the Commitment

First and foremost, understand that going red is a pretty serious commitment. Once you put a red pigment in your hair, it’s very difficult to remove and cannot be simply “dyed over.” Red hair color tends to fade more quickly than other shades, so you need to be willing to put the effort and money into keeping it looking its best and most vibrant. Using the right hair products, such as Bumble and Bumble products that’ll protect and preserve your new color, is a must!

Choosing the Right Shade

Okay, now that you understand the commitment involved with going red, it’s time to choose the shade of red that’s best for your skin tone and features.

If you have a naturally fair complexion, then you’ll be best-suited with a bright copper or red as opposed to a deeper shade of red. The lighter and more subtle shades of red will best complement your lighter skin and will avoid making you look too pale. On the other hand, if you have a darker complexion, then auburn and deep red shades are probably your best bet. These deeper shades of red will accentuate your deep skin tone.

If you have a medium skin tone, you’re in luck because you can get away with pretty much any shade of red. That’s because people with medium skin tones have lots of different pigments; as a result, their hair can, too!

Updating Your Makeup

Once you go red, you may find that your usual makeup routine just isn’t doing it for you anymore. That’s because your makeup looks different when you have a different hair color; what might have been flattering with your previous hair color may now have the opposite effect. Fortunately, with a few simple tweaks to your existing beauty routine, you can look your best as a redhead.

Start with your eyebrows: if you didn’t dye your brows to match your hair (hopefully you didn’t!), you’ll want to start using a brow pencil to give your brows just the slightest red tint. Ideally, the brow pencil you use should be a couple shades lighter than your actual hair color. Furthermore, when you go red, most women also find that they don’t need to wear as much makeup. You may want to go with a less drastic blush and more natural eye shadow colors to strike a balance between your bold hair color and your makeup.

As you can see, there’s a lot to keep in mind when you decide to color your hair red! By keeping these pieces of advice in mind, you can select the right shade of red for you and alter your makeup routine in a way that’s flattering.
